The November 2000 popular vote proves that all the pre-election polls did not reflect the true sentiment of the majority in our country. Labor, along with other progressive forces like the NAACP, Coalition of Black Trade Unions, National Organization for Women and Rainbow/Push Coalition turned out the “unlikely voters.�

While Americans sit watching television, listening to the talking heads in order to figure out this mess of an election, the rest of the world has been making its own judgements. The world is seeing not only the hypocrisy of the U.S. elections but an even clearer example of blatant anti-democratic practices:

George W. Bush delivered his “victory speech� almost a week ago even though the recounts were still ongoing. So much for the will of the voters.

The accusations of racism regarding the experiences of many Blacks and Latinos at the polls in Florida echo the historical exclusion of people of color from American political life. This is the real crisis – not the chads – and it should come as no surprise.
