The General Council of the World Federation of Democratic Youth met this weekend in Lisbon, Portugal to decide, among other things, the location of the next World Festival of Youth and Students. After nearly a year of consultations with each organization that bid to host the Festival, the Coordinating Committee found Belarus to have the necessary infrastructure and political climate to host it in 2009.

The Commission of Europe and North America of WFDY (CENA), strongly expresses its discontent about the violation of the democratic rights and liberties of the Communist Youth of Czech Republic as it remains penalized by the Ministry of Interior. We condemn the fact that KSM has been summoned to appear before a court on the 19th of March 2008 despite mass international reactions by organized groups, parties and movements from the entire political spectrum and, by thousands of anonymous and well known personalities from all over the world.

Now we have the opportunity not only to strengthen the Democratic majority, but also to elect a Democrat as president—setting a real path to end the war, secure jobs, and improve access to quality schools.
