YCL clubs... Caught up in the struggle |
Chicago, Illiois
Whitney Young High School Clubs
This school year the Chicago High School YCL held a number of activities including "Commie Day." This was a day aimed toward educating people about the YCL and issues that we deal with. We sold buttons and t-shirts, passed out literature and asked students to sign petitions.
We also held two educational forums on socialism with the Communist Party district organizers.
Hartford, Connecticut
The fight against police brutality continues
This spring we traveled to Washington DC to join with people from around the counrty (including some cops) enraged by police actions of violence and daily disrespect against Black and Latino working people.
Two weeks later, a Hartford policeman shot and killed an unarmed 14-year old African-American boy in the back who had his arms raised. We took to the streets with posters that became slogans of the movement: "Stop Killing Our Youth," and "Trigger Happy Cops, Go Get Training."
YCLers helped to define the campaign demands to fire the cop involved and the chief of police and kick out bad civilian police review board members.
We continue our vigil at the police station so that the boy, Aquan Salmon, is not forgotten. We will continue to hold vigils until the cop is found guilty and our demands are met.
Potomac, Maryland
New club!!!
The YCL club at our school, St. Andrew's Episcopal School in the DC suburb of Potomac, Md., is small but growing. Consisting of about six members, the club petitions the school administrations with parts of the Youth and Student Bill of Rights and works to protest injustice in the school community.
