Strategy, Tactics & Success: Building Power in the November Elections and Beyond

Top level Dynamic Magazine Back Issues 2002 - November

Our country is being devastated by the Bush administration. Like the miners in Pennsylvania who survived because they stuck together, we the people can pull ourselves out of danger with our vote in the 2002 elections.

On Tuesday, November 5, the entire House of Representatives, a third of the Senate, 36 Governors and many State Legislatures will be determined. This election is a referendum on the policies of the Bush administration. If the extreme right wing Republicans win the majority of seats in Congress, it will signal the Bush administration to move forward full steam ahead.

Bush has no answer for the workers who are suffering wholesale layoffs and loss of pensions and healthcare. Instead he wants to give even more tax cuts to his corporate buddies.

Bush has no answer for immigrants and people of color victimized by racial profiling. Instead he is pressuring neighbor to spy on neighbor and threaten to put dissenters away in holding camps.

Bush has no answer for young people who joined the military to get an education, and now fear losing their lives in a senseless invasion of Iraq. Because hes driven to secure the oil rich Middle East for private gain, involving the possible use of nuclear weapons.

From the moment George W. Bush was appointed president, he has looted the public treasury to hive huge sums to the very rich. His top team - Vice President Dick Cheney, Attorney General John Ashcroft, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld - are all up to their necks in corporate thievery.

They have cynically taken advantage of the September 11 tragedy to push through their anti-democratic agenda. Their program is against the interests of the majority of people. It includes taking away constitutional right of dissent. It is focused on destroying unions and leaving workers without a strong voice at a time of economic crisis.

While millions of families are suffering loss of jobs, the Bush agenda takes money out of the human needs and funds unprecedented military buildup. Unilateralism, war and confrontation had made our country and the world less safe. The effect on children communities of color, working families and family farmers is catastrophic.

You can say no to Bush with your vote on Nov. 5!

The extreme right wing is pouring huge sums of money into the 2002 elections. Their goal is to maintain control of the House of Representatives and win back the Senate. They are targeting the most outspoken members of Congress, especially members of the Congressional Black Caucus and Progressive Caucus, who have challenged the Bush administration. They also have their sights on important Governor and State Legislature elections.

A republican win in this election will be a giant setback in the struggles to win better wages, working conditions, equal rights, health care, publican education and a clean, safe and peaceful environment. Thats why the labor movement, along with many progressive and independent voters, African American, Latino, women, youth, senior, and environmental organizations, and many who stand for peace are working hard to prevent a right-wing Republican victory on November 5. It is the best expression of political independence from corporate control.

Build a Peoples Movement

From coast to coast people are beginning to come together to stand up for there needs and their rights. Longshore workers on the West Coast are battling intervention from the Bush Administration in contract negotiations. Family farmers in the Midwest and the South are standing up against foreclosures. Students in Philadelphia and New York are marching to save public education. This blossoming movement of labor and community is the hope for the future. Voting is a vital step in that involvement.

Ending right-wing Republican tyranny in Congress will open the door to place bigger demands on elected officials for living wage jobs, retirement and healthcare security, affirmative action, protection of the environment and non-military solutions to the worlds problems. A blow to the right wing in this election will clear the way toward running candidates and electing a Congress of working people who know the deal, and who will fight in the interests of working people.

It is possible to win November if each of us joins together with millions of others to help on union phone bank passes the word at work and at school and talks with our neighbors. Every Senate and Congressional District can make the difference.

We Communists issue this call to action because we reject the shredding of Constitutional democratic rights. We share in the vision of a government truly of, by, and for the people. In this election, all democratic-minded people are called upon to step forward, vote, build the movement and make history.
