The Draft is Coming

In all probability, a new military draft is coming. While it is not as evident in the urban areas, preparation has already begun. This fall, while working on election campaigns in rural areas, I spoke with public servants who have already completed the Selective Service trainings for what to do when the draft is instated.

While the public is currently anti-draft, events change, and, although there has been talk of an extended draft, the traditional draft will be easier to swallow for the general public. If we want to mount a fight back against the draft we will need to build a male, female, black, brown, and white coalition of youth. We have to recruit allies from the non-youth anti-war community. Without them, we will not be able to build support.

Those of us that are in danger of the draft need all the help we can get. If we are to keep the draft from being reinstated we have to work together. We have to look past our differences, and remember that we all deserve the right to decide what to do with our lives. Unity is the answer, we cannot be divided, and we cannot be afraid to take up this struggle.

I’m fighting the war at my high school!

I’m a 15 year old sophomore in the middle of suburban Folsom, California. Nobody at my school cares at all about politics, or the war, or justice...

Nonetheless, we founded an anti-Bush, anti-war, activist group - The Unquiet Youth. I hope that name isn’t already taken. We have yet to make a difference, but that is about to change.

We are passing a ragtag petition around school, to kick the military recruiters off our campus. Those kids in
Brooklyn did it, so can we. I was inspired by the story in
Dynamic.

Post-election Update: Together We Can Win!

Dear Dynamic,

Serving as a Progressive Democrat in an Assembly tightly controlled by Republican crusaders spouting tired rhetoric about “waste, fraud and abuse as excuses to take away what is left of the social safety net that protects American working people from corporate greed is no fun. But it has to be done.

It’s time for the Democrats to stop wringing our hands and wailing about “moral values as they contemplate inching further to the right in the hopes someone will mistake them for Republicans.

I’m living proof that a progressive, pro-labor, pro-choice, pro-jobs, working class individual can still win in Middle America. And, I’m not the only example out there.

When the Left has a smart plan, based on building power through broad coalitions, grassroots activism and a populist anti-big business message - we win. This year, all the groups that we had a plan to talk to and mobilize for the elections - youth, African Americans, Latinos, the working poor - we won. All the folks we didn’t talk to - white, blue-collar voters in rural and exurban areas - we lost. What does that teach us?

When folks only hear one message they tend to believe that message because there is no viable alternative. We, the Left, have to start carrying our message out there. It has to be done.

I hold office today because a dedicated group of volunteers, especially volunteers from the Young Communist League and other organizations understood this principle. They worked tirelessly to get the right message out to all the voters in my district. We knew it had to be done. We did it. We won, and we can do it again.
